- AVG Antivirus - Free for Personal use and is quite good. Dont have to shell out bigbucks for McAfee
Anti-Spyware/Adware/Malware
- Ad-Aware - Free for Personal use
- Spybot Search and Destroy - Another good free anti-spyware
- Windows Defender - Microsoft's answer to malware (Validation of Windows required... There are ways to get around that - But I aint touching that with a 100 feet pole)
- CoolWebSearch Remover - specifically for cws adware which has been quite "adaptive"
Root Kit Detectors
Rootkit detectors and removers are still evolving and removing root kits is more than a minor hasle and many experts feel that the best way to be absolutely sure is to start afresh
- Rootkit Unhooker - Free and good root kit detector made by our friends in russia ;)
- Rootkit Buster - Offered for Free by Trend micro
Windows History Cleaners for the slightly Paranoid
- Scrub XP - from bartdart... a click on the icon in your tray will clear all your history... Free
- Clear Cache Feature for Internet Explorer automatically deletes all temporary Internet files, cookies, and history files. This was developed to programmatically clear these files when a corrupt entry caused errors with Internet Explorer
